Liverpool Football Club is going through a very tough patch at the moment; none of us would try to deny that. But when the going gets tough, we’re meant to stick together and battle on through. Isn’t that why we’re called supporters?
I’d say internet opinion on Benitez amongst LFC fans is 50-50, maybe 60-40 against; this is no surprise, because even when he nearly won us the title on a shoe-string budget people weren’t happy with him. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, of course. There are some very intelligent arguments made every day for Rafa to be sacked. But I’m afraid I still won’t budge on this: the problem is the American owners and the financial crisis in our midst. Our manager is one of the best in the business and he’d be sorely missed if he was sacked.
What I find more annoying than fans who speak out against Benitez for no reason is when ex-players join in the fun. Jamie Redknapp claimed the other day, in the glorious publication known as the Daily Mail, of course, that Benitez ‘manipulates’ Liverpool fans into supporting him, when in reality the team is ‘going nowhere’. The headline described his revelation as a ‘blast’ from a ‘Liverpool legend’. The worst part of this is that Redknapp, the same knucklehead who sits there every week in his grey Armani suit and thin black tie – tres chic, Jamie – and agrees with almost everything that Andy Grey and Richard Keys say, is calling US thick. In his years of punditry, of which there has now been one too many, I have never heard that lad say one interesting or intelligent thing.
Doesn’t he earn enough money from Sky, without having to resort to taking cheap pops at his former club in the nationals? As for his ‘legendary’ status – the boy had a nice technique when it came to ball-striking, but that was about it. He won one Coca Cola cup, and certainly never came anywhere near the kind of success that Benitez has brought to the club. He has no right to be mouthing off about us in public.
Patrick Berger, whose trophy cabinet is similarly lacking in top class silverware, has also criticised Rafa; Sounness hardly did him any favours last night on Sky. Why can’t these people understand that the reason we are underperforming is a lack of funding combined with an injury crisis? Why do they persist in making life even more difficult at the club by publicly dissenting? They don’t make any rational arguments as to why our poor performance is actually Benitez’s fault.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think former players over the years have done more damage than good when talking about our club in the media. I hoped that this was a result of our decline from the 80s to the 90s, but when players from the dreary 90s era start banging on about it not being ‘good enough for a club like Liverpool’, I want to make it perfectly clear where they can go.
Only, I’m not allowed to swear on this site. Use your imagination.

Couldnt agree with you more mate…..Great article
Rafa out as soon as possible.
If we realy love our club than Rafa must go.
why Dosenna played the last 5 min? and why Aquiliani just played the last 2 min? and why Lucas is always playing? the answer is ….Rafa is no good
Agree 100%
fanatastic article! thats what i been saying all along!
Well said & written. Its very sad to see ex-players jumping the wagon to criticise the manager. Truly surprised. We don’t hear legends like King Kenny or Ian Rush coming out with criticism but motivational statements. As for G Souness, his status of as Liverpool legend in the history of the club has to removed & strike off! YNWA all red fans must stick together to battles this tough period. I am optimistic that we will finish in the top 4 come end of the season & in Champions League again.
well said, you can add ronnie wheelan to that as well. souness has no right to say anythink, he ruined liverpool fc, he was the one you started the decline. dicks, stewart, ivan kosma. to name a few. he let beardsley, houghton, mcmahon. stauton. burrows saunders all go and bought the crap above. a great player but a poor manager, but rafa has to take some blame kuyt? ive never liked him a work horse at best, dossena? who lucas? a squad player at best, voronin ? no comment he needs better scouts, or he needs to talk to kenny. i also blame the yanks, no money so we have to settle for second best players all in all rafa should get another year, and if it does not work out he should go .but he needs the owners to back him with money..
Could not agree more.
Logic speaks at last.
I think Rafa made those late late subs because he wanted to kill some time because we let in some real late goals against Lyon and didn’t want the same to happen again. I think that was a good move by Rafa.
this is a fantastic article mate, your the kind of guy i would like to sit and discuss (rational) football with.It baffles me how quickly some former players will jump to hit us when we are down,i think jamie is a top lad but how does he justify his recent comments, you are spot on in everything you have said, great to see someone supporting rafa, unfortunately idiocy seems to rule supreme when the chips are down. I firmly believe rafa is the only one to lead the reds.IRWT AMERICANS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi John
I understand and agree with some of your points regarding ex-players making comments that aren’t that helpful. However I dont agree that our problems now are down to just a lack of funds and injuries.
We have got one of the largest squads in the top flight. We have had more money to spend than the majority of top flight clubs. Yet our squad isn’t up to scratch. That surely rests on Rafa’s shoulders. He has brought far too many players who aren’t good enough to grace the Liverpool shirt. Josemi, Voronin, Barragan, etc. He’s let good players leave Keane, Crouch, Hyppia, Warnock. How many of the transfers have come good compared to those that have failed. Since day one of his reign we have been purchasing future young stars. How many of them have made it and how many can you actually see making the grade at Anfield?
Rafa has been in charge for 5 years now, he won the champions league with Houlliers team, the FA Cup we barely beat West Ham. Our footbal isn’t great, far too many sideways passes and were very predictable way of playing. I was brought up on the Liverpool way being ‘pass and move’, nowdays its pass and stand. We should of been beating Drebcren not one-nil but by three or four goals. I being to think that the faithful support the kop shows Rafa is doing more harm than good. He not in fear of his job. He knows he can get away with murder and the fans will support him. I personally will give it to the end of the season if he dont deliver then he needs to go and we need a new approach. This year should of been our year, we should of being moving forward but were actually falling.
Dont forget the way in which Rafa treated Alonso last summer. He was our best player last year, if he was treated better he may have stayed.
Great article by the way, couldn’t agree more “grey Armani suit and thin black tie – tres chic” HAHA luv it, it sooo true!
Mario, nobody knows better than the manager on the players condition & fitness. At least for Aquiliani, he came on in the last 2 minutes to experience the atmosphere. Why would RB bring him on since LFC leading & a big scoreline(if we manage to score) doesn’t make any differences to the outcome.
Spot on mate. The team is going through a bad spell, form and injuries the main cause. The media reaction however is totally disproportionate and it’s “ex-reds” who’s quotes actually give these views ligitimacy. Redknapp, like most of the Skysports “pundits” has become nothing more than a nodding dog, quite happy to pickup his pay cheque from Rupert Murdoch, the same media barren who owns the S*n “newspaper”. We’ve played poorly this season but journalism should be objective and above all balanced.
Rafa have too much ego. If we could keep some good players, Alonso, crouchy and much more, including some talent players from the 2nd team. We should not going to be in this zone. However, we still keep same spirit and keep moving.
well said mario,
Benitez must Go!
we bought a player, Aquilani, who’s 25 and personally-because i’ve seen him play for roma. i think he’s a great player, and he’s playing one minute? what tha F*** is wrong with benitez, why did he brought back Voronin if he is not going to use him, why was Yossi on the bench on a crucial game? and why is damn Lucas always starting, he’s one of the worst players i’ve seen my whole life, im better than him! one more thing Stevie is 29, how come we don’t have a player who’s from the house; that is going to be the leader after Stevie?!
I just want benitez out, Liverpool is among the best teams in the world we deserve way better YNWA
I completely agree with you John, Rednapp et al need to shut their mouths and get behind the team. Sniping from the side lines does not help anyone.
Everyone, fans and ex players / managers alike need to get behind the team so that they can prove the critics wrong on the pitch.
Oscar and Raiza, are you guys for real?? Raiza in particular, I’d like to know how Rafa has spent more money than other top flight clubs. Please, let us all know. This is the sort of drivel the media feed out and its sad that most of our so called fans do not have the wit to think for themselves and make their own well informed decisions. Is it really that difficult?? I’m not surprised that most of the media are having a field day with us, I haven’t really expected any better from them. Obviously Rafa ain’t blameless but imo he’s massively overachieved for Liverpool and those expecting more are sorry to say spoilt greedy brats. What I’m surprised about is our fans. There is a quote that goes something like “Its in adversity that you know who your true friends are.” Well, in the last few weeks I have learned the following about most of our supporters:
1. We have quite a significant following of glory hunters.
2. Most of them are thick cunts.
Forgive my language but somethings are just unbelievable!! Great article m8!!
I can’t agree with the article. Benitez has had more than enough time to turn things around, and a staggering amount of money.
Raiza hit the nail on the head, the blind faith people have in Benitez because of one lucky night in Istanbul is staggering. Without that game he would have been sacked a long long time ago.
Liverpool fans are suppost to be the most knowledgeable in the land, but we’re turning into a laughing stock for continuing to back a man who’s taking us in the wrong direction.
We play ugly football, we rely too much on individuals, we have no squad depth, yet Benitez continues to reel off excuse after excuse about injuries. Every team has injuries, get over it, ours are no worse than anyone else, ours are just more noticeable because of the dross we bring in as cover.
Inter Milan are desperate to make an impression in Europe, something Rafa’s very good at. Liverpool are desperate to win a league title, something Mr Mourinho is very good at.
Wait until the end of the season, and lets set the wheels in motion.
The one that chokes me is Souness. Great player, but not in a position to critisise when it comes to management. Most of the pundits are ex players who didn’t make it as managers or didn’t fancy the stress of management. (How come, with the exception of Kenny, our ex players make rubbish managers, while United’s are generally OK?). And as to why we didn’t hang on the Crouch, Keane, Alonso…I think that he did want to hang on to Crouch and Alonso, but couldn’t and where would the money come from for purchases if nobody was sold?
Shawn, just because someone has a different opinion to you doesn’t mean they’re a ‘thick cunt’.
And backing Benitez doesn’t make you any more of a fan than the people who believe his time is up. People are entitled to their opinion, and for what it’s worth my opinion is that Benitez should be replaced for the good of the club.
Over achieved? Don’t make me laugh. Look across Stanley Park mate, then you’ll see a club who have overachieved.
Don’t get me wrong, i’d still love Benitez to turn things around and prove his doubters wrong, i’d happily eat humble pie, but we’ve gone three seasons without a trophy and this looks like being our fourth unless we start taking the cup seriously again.
Great article, it doesn’t matter what Raffa does because certain elements (so called supporters and anti - liverpool media) will still criticise him. He has had money to spend but not all at one time and it has been documented that he was unable to bring in certain players because of a lack of funds. Injuries this season haven’t help him either nor does the expectations of the LFC faithful.
No matter how much we might want things to be different the reality is that every team has poor seasons and no team always procedes past the group stages of the Champions League. That’s just a fact of life and we all have to get on with.
Following our knock out, the club issued a statement that Rafa is not only safe but the man for the future. Rafa himself earlier disclosed the club had budgeted only for the group stages of CL this year. Neither the owners nor the executive director ever came out to deny that. Such misstatement by any employee can lead to instant dismissal unless IT IS TRUE. The owners know the limitations Rafa currently faces. Mr Redknapp’s mind is as twisted as the way his name is written and pronounced. In his time, we hardly went to round two of the UEFA Cup and he spent most of his career on the treatment table. He should be more concerned with allegations of dodgy transfer dealings by his father than Rafa talk about Rafa who has won almost every title or trophy on offer. If the media is always right, how was it wrong about Redknapp senior? If it talks rubbish, then he is part of it!
Well, like I said, Benitez has his faults. And I still maintain he’s done very well since he came to Liverpool. Before he came, we were never in contention for the champions league, and were always being knocked out of the UEFA cup even before it began. Since he came, we’ve never failed to qualify past the group stage, this is the first time this has happened. How you want more from him is beyond me considering the support (or lack of it) he gets from the board as the likes of chelsea and citeh spend massively on their players+squad.
As for injuries, I’d like to see chelsea lose drogba, ballack, terry, malouda, etc all around the same time, tell me they’ll not struggle. Its worse for us considering our weak squad. Again - our weak squad, who’s fault is that? Do you think Benitez didn’t know that a long time ago and want to strengthen it. After losing alonso, hypia and arbeloa, isn’t it well known by now that when he was supposed to replace them and strengthen the squad as well. What happened? He replaced them (johnson, aquilani, kyriagos(sp)) What about strengthening the squad?? The money went to the banks… Is that his fault??
My backing of Benitez is backed up by facts and patience. Not lazy shit from the media. Sorry for the cunt part, but like I said, I cant understand some of our fans. You say we are the supposed to be the most knowledgeable fans in the world. At the moment people like you are proving that to be utter crap!! Knowledge is power, a little knowledge is dangerous.
I respect your opinion, but it would hold alot more weight if it was factual.
Outstanding article John.
I absolutely agree with every point that you make. Jamie Redknapp, blue arse Andy Gray, Richard Keys, all of the Soccer Saturday pundits (xmt Phil Thompson). How many cups, or league titles have any of them won as football coaches/managers ? As the answer to this question is nil with almost all of the above mentioned vacuum heads, they can hardly make any kind of informed comments about the situation at my beloved team. OK so they are all ex players (apart from Mr Keys), but successful coaches/managers ?
NEVER !!! When Redknapp, and Co achieve even half of what Rafa has achieved for LFC as successful managers then maybe I just might give them some time of day. Until then Sky pundits - STFU !!!
Lets all now reserve all of our efforts as supporters towards being positive, and supporting the Reds, and Rafa for the rest of the season (by the way theres still a bit more than half of the season to go) . Lets see if we can still salvage some silverware, and stop all of of this negative shite, and get behind the team ! All round the fields of Anfield Road………………….etc.
great article and couldn’t agree more . the so called ex players sticking the boot in should be ashamed. lfc will always be one of the greatest football clubs in the world, we all go through bad patches and i think the blame must mainly be aimed at the yanks, although benitez hasn’t helped himself with some very poor transfer deals. we will pull through and we will win the prem , i just hope rafa is the man who brings it home .
a little poem that always warms my heart and keeps me strong…….
To the 96 that passed away ,
at Hillsborough on that fateful day ,
still looking down with smiles so proud
you sing with us as we sing aloud
you lead us, guide us, help us through
i know istanbul was down to you,
and though the future is unknown
one things for sure, you’ll never walk alone.
I couldnt agree more with what shawn has to say. Well said mate.
I have to agree with comments left by Raiza, couldn’t put it better myself.
I AGREE 100% MATE WITH U. YNWA
Mate, I agree completely with ur opinion that club badly needs funding and those suckers are refraining to loose their pockets.
But One point here I want to make is Rafa shudn’t have sold Alonso in the beginning of year instead would have bought some good backup striker. Coz w/Torres’ injury v r badly missing his replacement.
John, fantastic article. Glad to see there are still some of us that haven’t got carried away with the media panic and actually have the sense to realise the route of our problems (lack of funds and support and the recent high amount of injuries). I agree with everyone that says the squad is nowhere near good enough but no football fan can disagree that our first 11 can match any team on the planet. Benitez knows this and obviously would like to build a squad of players capable of stepping into the first team without it feeling like were missing something but he quite simply doesn’t have the money. Many fans/pundits/ex-players say that Rafa has spent massive amounts of money, but compared to the amount made in player sales the outgoings are nowhere near that of the scum, chealsea or citeh. This summer we made roughly 40mill (ish) from player sales and spent roughly the same amount which shows a lack of support from the board! Rafa will turn our fortunes around, i have absolutely no doubt about it. Keep the faith. At the end of a storm there’s a golden sky………………..
Just to add to my previous message. YANKS give us enough money to buy quality (not the dross who are presently backing up for injured players). If you cant do this, sell to the Arabs or someone else who is willing put their money on the table. We are still the greatest club in the world - its just that we’re going through a bad patch and we need injured players back. Lets now look forward to thrashing the blue noses on Sunday ! Outside the Shankly Gates……………I heard a koppite calling ………….etc !!!
Hi Shawn
When I refer to top flight clubs I refer to other clubs in the Premier League. On net spend (see below) Rafa has spent
more than United, only Chelsea have spent more. Obviously some of the figures are masked by payments that are spread out over years. I dont think its the amount of money he has spent that is the main issue. Its the quality of HIS signing which have been poor. Many players not enough for to play for us. The theory that he has massively over-achieved at Liverpool is not one I agree with. We are a massive club Shawn, one of the elite clubs in world sootbal he’s more so underachieved. On top of that the equality of our play is poorer compared to many others. Benitez has shown he is tactically acute, but this season in particular some of this tactical decisions have been very questionable.
I believe former players have a right to comment, they played for Liverpool and know a great deal of the traditions and expectations of the club. Jaime Redknapp was a very good servant to the club, for fans to now have a go at him for speaking what frankly the rest of football can see for themselves isn’t right.
Blind faith leads you down dead ends.
We are the same point as we were with Houllier, who had the backing of the fans but maybe should of departed a season or two before he actually did. How long should Rafa be given? No one is bigger than the club, thats includes Rafa. Rafa should know if he fails to deliever then he needs to walk away.

Many critics about Rafa, and many more critics about the performance of LFC.
Critics - stay away!!! You’ll no other than big mouth small brains.
Supporters - welcome!!! You’ll are the one holding the club together.
I’ve been reading the comments by all and I really would not let Jamie Rednapp’s opinion bother anyone - he was just another “glamour kid” who really failed to impress and go the distance at such a great club as LIVERPOOL. John Barnes is here in South Africa and I was watching an interview with him yesterday … It was so refreshing to hear an ex Liverpool star expressing some real sanity on our situation - exactly what you said … our poor performance is a lack of funding to buy “good” players, coupled with key injuries in numbers (not just 1/2 but 11 or so). He pointed out that the good players will always go to Manu & Chelsea because of the cash they have to offer these players. Rafa has made good with what he has on his books and it will turn - keep the faith!! YNWA
Benitez should have been removed 18 months ago , We will NEVER win another trophy under this guy. Lucas, Dossena, Ngog, Babel, Kuyt, Insua,m Morientes, Keane, Josemi, ALL HIS SIGNINGS stop blaming the Yanks - Who PUSHED ALONSO OUT but kept Lucas???? who sold CROUCH AND SISSOKO?…. im a sick of all this Rafa we trust rubbish HE MUST GO GO!!!
RedKnapp was.an average player who could strike a ball reasonably well but people out there dont get wound up by people like this like Andy Gray he is paid to talk shit if he wants to slag his old club off then so be it he will never go down as a Liverpool legend and in my opinion got far too many caps for England than he deserved
Benitez has not been perfect in all of this, but he has done all he could do under the circumstances. He had to sell all the players he sold in order to raise money to buy players. He could have kept them(against some of thei wills) and lost them when teor contracts ended and we would have not got the funds that we did get for them.
We cannot balme the manager for what goes on, on the field if we dont know what goes on in trainging. If he gives them instructions anf if they go out there and because of lack of confidence they dont perform, how does that become the managers fault???
Yes there are some things that we see and think he could do differently, but only he ,knows whats going on in camp and what potential the players have…
As he said that when he signs a player he doesnt sign them for a few months, its for years.
Give the man a break!!! All clubs go through what we are going through… we will get back on top…
And we will be the best again… With Benitez leading the way…
If finace wasnt the issue, Benitez would have been sacked ages ago… But maybe the owners realize that… thats why he’s still the Manager.
I think the blame lies firmly at the two fools who put the Yanks in place and then they ran when trouble was on the horizan with their thirty pieces of silver all the club problems are to be laid squarely at their feet, I am quite embarassed that I cant remember the second name but Moores is the first, his comrade’s name escapes me apologies guys but the club is important now.Rafa’s judgement day will come but not at the moment, I personally am disgusted with being the laughing stock of this league, forget those ex-players there are reasons for their opinions and love of the club is very far down the list.Whilst I dont agree with all the points in the article it was well written and thought provoking. Thanks lads.
Rafa’s a great coach however he just seems to be making the wrong decisions lately. The players as well need to het their act together. When buying new players he needs to configure whether they will fit in the English game. Many foreign players have been a total flop.
This guy is speaking some sense. Our problems are not all down to one person or group of people. Mistakes have been made at every level but it would be inaccurate and short-sighted to vilify a certain set of mistakes made by one person or group of people over any other. As for Redknapp, everyone is entitled to an opinion and he has his. Thats not to say I agree with him because constant criticism of the players, manager, board and owners isn’t what we need.
What we do need is; support for the players, management and board, a clean bill of health for the first team squad, fresh direction and focus and of course investment which would allow for a better standard of player to join the club and would hopefully be a catalyst for the likes of Gerrard, Mascherano and Torres to stay.
Lastly, like many other fans I am very frustrated and upset about the current state of the football club that I hold so dear to my heart but the fact of the matter is that every loyal ‘fan’ including Redknapp and Souness need to support the club and help it to make strides in the right direction.
i’m not a reds fan but what a load of rubbish this article is ……what annoys me about “die hard” fans is they get so blinkered in their approach and critism to their beloved team.
Rafa is no good for liverpool , surely the most ardent can see that now. Players like Jamie come out and make honest statements that are true and people get upset and defensive becuase it hurts there beloved liverpool. Wake up !!!!
Liverpool wont even finish top four this season and what does rafa do ….take off his best striker against birmingham. He is an arrogant self obsessed idiot who is only looking after number 1 ……not the bigger picture of Liverpool FC.
Rafa didnt bring you glory …………..Stevie G brought the glory and dragged you to the Champs league win and turned the game round himself. He has carried the team for too long and unfortunately for him this season he has struggled to do it again.
Rafa out ………probably O’Neill in as you cant afford Mourinho.
As i said, not a reds fan but just an honest football fan. Sorry if reply causes offence. None intended.
good morning, awesome writing.
