Should we go Siamese?

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2010/05/10/stadium-idea-for-liverpool-and-everton-football-clubs-unveiled-100252-26411623/

At a time when politicians are being forced to work together to forge an uncomfortable alliance, is it time for Merseyside’s two giant football clubs to do the same? The plans discussed above would have Everton and Liverpool sharing a ‘Siamese’ stadium, with two individual grounds existing side by side but sharing a central connecting ‘spine’.

Why do it? Well, the business group suggesting the unique blueprint says that Liverpool and Everton could save up to £220 million by joining forces; each team would still have an individual stadium; the project could be completed by 2013. What to make of this bizarre concept?

My own thoughts have ranged widely – when I first read the article I dismissed the ideas within as ludicrous; on reflection, the ‘double stadium’ would be a magnificent structure and, if anything, would make the Merseyside rivalry more fierce than it already is – without taking away either club’s individual ‘home turf’.

Of course, I’ve reflected once again and now am firmly against the idea. I want Liverpool FC to have its own stadium, like all of the world’s other top clubs – I can’t imagine many other teams with the stature of LFC accepting such a plan. The ‘twin’ stadiums suggested above would likely have a very limited amount of variability from one to the other and, quite honestly, I’d rather stay at Anfield and lose revenue than spend big on a shared stadium that we’d almost definitely eventually tire of.

There’s a reason that Siamese twins usually want to have surgery – two individual entities can’t exist together forever. And if they do manage it, then they often blend into one… I don’t think anybody can face that idea.

What do you think?

  2. i think its a great idea only because WE ARE IN DEBT. This idea save 220 million. If thats the case then we spend that kinda money on your benzemas and your david silvas of this world. If Inter milan and ac can share a staduim why cant everton n liverpool. Also the speed of it, it will be done in matter of 3 years. Liverpool could be on the rise in matter of years new owner new stadium . I also believe it would add even more fire to the derby. Its not like we are having those blue nose in same seat. If you are a true Liverpool fan you would realise that we are on our knees and there is no point to allow rivalry (which would not be deminish) to make us crumble

  3. you got new owners and went downhill, more new owners will make it worse, liverpool, read portsmouth, points deducted, everton get a new stadium for themselves, great innit

  4. this idea is absolutely awful. I would rather spend the extra 50 million and actually have some space in between the buildings, and have different-looking stadiums. sharing other ammenities such as the hotel and carpark wouldn’t be an awful idea, but to actually build them side-by-side is just stupid. even the drawings are clearly done by a second-rate architectural firm. and as an architect, i know for a fact that there are other, better ways to save money when building a stadium that doesn’t require this ludicrous proposal. The reds need their own stadium, and none of this texas-american bullshit architecture that the yanks proposed, a top-notch german firm that can both design it well and also for CHEAP, as “MrK” points out. I feel like i’m the only one that thinks cutting our losses, selling Mascherano, Gerrard, and Torres if we have to, and putting our all into building a new stadium. Not even 60,000 - I want at least 65-70,000…maybe with an upper deck that’s closed for games against hull or bolton. YNWA
